Life-Saving Pediatric Brain Surgery at Millennium Heights Medical Complex

When a young girl arrived at Owen King EU Hospital (OKEUH) unable to walk straight, barely able to hold her head up, and racked by unrelent- ing headaches, doctors discovered a tumour pressing against her brain. What followed was a race against time — and a story that speaks to the quiet excellence taking root in Saint Lucia’s healthcare system.

Saint Lucia is widely celebrated for its dramatic Pitons, its pristine beaches, and its status as a premier honeymoon destination. Less visible — but no less remarkable — are the efforts of its medical professionals. At the Millennium Heights Medical Complex, a team of dedicated doctors has set a new benchmark in care, following the successful treatment of a school-aged patient admitted to OKEUH with life-threatening neurological symptoms.

The patient arrived with a history of progressively severe headaches, loss of balance, vomiting, fainting spells, seizures, facial asymmetry, and weakness. Diagnostic imaging revealed a very large cerebellar tumour accompanied by hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain), both of which posed an immediate risk to life if left untreated.

To treat the life‑threatening condition, a highly specialised eight-hour procedure — involving two separate brain surgeries — was performed by the neurosurgery team. Led by Dr. Curby Dwaine Sydney, Consultant Neurosurgeon & Spine Surgeon, and assisted by Dr. Garcia, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Dr. Laporte, and Dr. Alexander, Neurosurgery Department Doctors, the team carried out the precise microsurgical removal of the tumour and the simultaneous placement of an External Ventricular Drain to relieve the dangerous build-up of cerebrospinal fluid pressing on the brain.

The procedure was supported by advanced neurosurgical equipment and implants provided by Cana Neuro Services, made possible through full Government of Saint Lucia funding approved by Cabinet. This decisive intervention ensured that the child received timely, uncompromised access to life-saving technology at no cost to the patient and family.

“This remarkable surgery was essentially a race against time to save this young patient’s life,” said Dr. Sydney. The successful outcome opens a new chapter for the young patient. Following the procedure, Dr. Sydney spoke with the patient and her parent about future aspirations, during which the patient expressed an interest in pursuing a career in nursing — an ambition perhaps inspired by the compassionate care she received from the nursing team at OKEUH and the wider circle of doctors, technicians, and auxiliary staff who supported her throughout her stay. The Millennium Heights Medical Complex extends its warmest wishes to her in all future endeavours.

Critical intraoperative and post-operative care was delivered through seamless collaboration with the Pediatric, Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit teams, led respectively by Dr. Christian, Consultant Pediatrician, Dr. Augustin and Dr. Tatabul, Consultant Anesthesiologists, and Dr. Sananbria, Consultant and Head of the ICU. These teams were supported by the paediatric ward nursing team, as well as nurses from the corresponding departments, technicians, orderlies, and ancillary and auxiliary staff.

Following meticulous post-operative monitoring, 24 hours in the ICU, and multidisciplinary care, the patient made a full neurological recovery. All prior symptoms — headaches, loss of balance, facial weakness, and neurological deficits — resolved. She was discharged without complications, smiling, healthy, and excited to return to normal life. True to her character, the young patient — an avid reader — spent her recovery devouring over thirteen books, transforming her hospital stay into a journey of learning and hope.

This extraordinary outcome stands as a powerful testament to what is possible when clinical excellence, government support, and teamwork converge. It reinforces that world-class, life-saving neurosurgical care is not only available in Saint Lucia — it continues to thrive.

As this and many similar success stories continue to unfold, Saint Lucia is demonstrating to the region and the world that its healthcare system — despite the odds — is capable of delivering advanced, compassionate, and collaborative care at the highest level.
